Summary: The Assistant Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) contributes significantly to the process of identifying, qualifying, soliciting, and stewarding foundation and corporate prospects for the fundraising priorities of Wake Forest University. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Assistant Director serves as the primary grant writer in CFR, working collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, and other University administrators to accomplish the department's goals. The Assistant Director is also responsible for creating and delivering exceptional stewardship reports to corporate and foundation donors.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Under the direction of the AVP and Director, writes, compiles, reviews, and edits assigned grant proposals as well as letters of inquiry and other correspondence to foundations and corporations. Regularly contacts faculty, administrators, development colleagues, and others to gather relevant information.
  • Coordinates with principal investigators, budget managers and others during the proposal development process to ensure that all proposals have been reviewed and approved through established internal processes. As such, communicates regularly with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Financial and Accounting Services, and other designated points of contact.
  • Leads the process of envisioning and developing customized stewardship reports to major foundations and corporations, based upon the specific requirements established by those donors and in a manner complementary to future proposals.
  • Serves as the primary CFR liaison with Communications & External Relations and other offices across campus to collaborate on customized stewardship reporting, with support from the Research & Stewardship Manager in terms of logistics and execution.
  • Advises the CFR team regarding maintaining and enhancing tracking systems for projects, prospects, and donors. Utilizes the Deacon Advancement Database (DAD) to track activity with support from the Manager.
  • Under the leadership of the Director, contributes annually to CFR's Annual Plan, including refreshing data, reports, and plans relevant to own work.
  • Recommends processes and standardized procedures to help improve CFR operations.
  • Plans corporate and foundation site visits in collaboration with the Director and the AVP, with support from the Manager in terms of logistics and execution.
  • As appropriate and in coordination with AVP and Director, communicates externally with foundation and corporate representatives and with key volunteers.
  • Keeps current on research initiatives at the university.
  • Participates in University Advancement events and activities as needed or required.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three to five years, related experience in grant proposal development and stewardship, particularly in the areas of corporate and foundation giving.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in creating and reporting on complex grant budgets.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workplace, Blackbaud, and use of online resources.
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and the ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and evaluate a variety of data.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diplomacy, courtesy, and tact at all times.
  • Demonstrated willingness to receive feedback and update skills on a continual basis.
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in higher education is strongly preferred.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work only. Collaborates with and provides direction to the Research & Stewardship Manager on generating specific plans, reports, and data requests to Alumni & Donor Services (ADS/UA) and/or to identified campus partners.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

Sedentary work primarily involving sitting/standing; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; and assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. No adverse environmental conditions expected.
