Emergency Response: Yes - Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE's emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.

Job Summary

Performs analytical work and research for the Accounting Policy & Research group, which coordinates and manages complex financial accounting and analysis relating to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Regulatory Accounting Principles (RAP) issues. Responsible for researching and assisting with accounting guidance based on accounting authoritative literature and pronouncements. Provides technical accounting and finance expertise on a wide range of accounting and business issues. Provides guidance to lesser experienced analysts and other members of the team.

The External Reporting group's responsibilities include the preparation and filing of the DTE Energy Form 10-K's, Form 10-Q's, and Form 11-K's with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Also handles preparation and submission of annual and quarterly regulatory filings to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).

Key Accountabilities
  • Assists with implementation of new accounting pronouncements and accounting research related to financial statement presentation and disclosures
  • Works with and provides analysis to external auditors on emerging accounting issues and reporting matters
  • Supports identification of process improvements and assists with implementation

Accounting Research and Policy

  • Provides accounting guidance on accounting related matters
  • Researches current and emerging accounting issues and implements related accounting policies and procedures
  • Assists with compliance with GAAP and regulatory accounting
  • Prepares accounting analysis and whitepapers
  • Analyzes business transactions and proposes accounting treatment with supervision

External Reporting

  • Provides information for the preparation of external financial reports in compliance with SEC and other regulatory reporting requirements
  • Prepares drafts of financial statements and footnotes
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or business related field and five years of experience in auditing, financial accounting and/or financial reporting
Other Qualifications

Preferred:

  • MBA
  • CPA or three years of experience in public accounting
  • Experience in the energy industry
  • Experience in continuous improvement and process improvement
  • Experience with SAP (Systems, Applications, and Products)

Accounting Policy and Research

  • Experience with application of ASC 815 related to complex derivative transactions and ASC 810 related to new acquisitions/contracts

Other Requirements:

  • Comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and SEC reporting requirements
  • Experience in application of a broad range of technical accounting and reporting requirements
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to organize work independently and work in teams
  • Computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to concisely analyze, summarize and present financial information to various management levels (including senior and executive)
  • Ability to respond quickly to changing customer requirements and changes in the business
  • Ability to work overtime during peak reporting periods; flexibility in working hours required
  • Willing to perform an emergency or storm assignment as needed
  • Engages in a positive working environment within and across functional areas
