Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Department of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration is to provide students within the department the skills and knowledge needed to secure jobs and careers in the area of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration. Another purpose is to prepare students to attend graduate school at the Master and Ph.D. levels.

The mission of the Department of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration is to prepare quality professionals in the areas of Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, Physical Education and Recreation Administration, facilitate practical and action-based research and scholarly inquiry. The undergraduate Kinesiology Degree program offers concentrations in General, Fitness and Wellness, Strength and Conditioning, and Physical Education Teacher Education.

The Recreation Administration degree program offers concentrations in Parks and Recreation Management, Recreational Sport Management with Business Minor, Recreational Sport Management with Sports Coaching Minor, and Recreational Therapy. We embrace and promote lifelong opportunities for learning and participation that contribute to healthy lifestyles. Our constituency consists of undergraduate and graduate students, the University Community, the local community, allied groups, organizations and practitioners. The four interrelated units of Sports Medicine, Kinesiology; Physical Education; and Recreation Administration serve our constituents through teaching, research endeavors, and service designed to prepare professionals that will impact the well-being of society as a whole.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to teach 12 hours per semester of core courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs; conduct research, publish and actively pursue external funding, engage in scholarly activities, participate in department/college curricular and programmatic development; show a demonstrated commitment to professional organizations; advise students, and provide departmental, university, community engagement, and professional service.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Applicants must provide evidence of
  • an earned doctorate in Recreation or a closely related field such as Recreational Therapy, Sports, and Athletic Management
  • credentials to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Recreational Therapy through various modes of delivery including face-to-face, hybrid, and online.
  • ability to conduct and publish original research in the areas of Recreational Therapy.
  • experience in or the potential for seeking and securing external funding
  • experience working with students from multicultural backgrounds and a strong commitment to promoting diversity.
  • professional work experience that includes demonstrated capacity for collaborative engagement with diverse community partners.
experience in recruiting, advising, and mentoring students at both the undergraduate & graduate levels, contributing to their academic and professional development.

  • Educational and Professional Qualifications: Possession of an earned doctorate in Recreation or closely related field with a certification in therapeutic recreation, and a license in Recreational Therapy in North Carolina or with the eligibility to obtain a license in Recreational Therapy in North Carolina.
  • Teaching Experience: Experience in teaching at the university level, with experience in teaching at an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in subjects such as Recreational Therapy. Ability to teach in various modalities, including online, hybrid, and face-to-face formats.
  • Research Capabilities: Demonstrated evidence of capability and commitment to pursue a well-defined research agenda in Recreational Therapy, or a related field.
  • Cultural Competency and Diversity: Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in working with students from multi-cultural backgrounds and a strong commitment to diversity.
  • Curriculum Development: Evidence of experience in developing online courses and programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels in Recreational Therapy or related courses.
  • Student Mentorship and Recruitment: Demonstrated ability to recruit, advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.


Minimum Education/Experience
Earned PhD in related field.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Yes, Certification in Therapeutic Recreation, and license in Recreational Therapy in North Carolina or with the eligibility to obtain a license in Recreational Therapy in North Carolina.
