Position Summary
This position will report to the Grounds Department of Campus Operations. Primary responsibilities include working with a team of individuals in maintaining University properties. This position will assist in providing leadership to small crews and inspection of grounds work in a geographical area of campus. The Grounds Team Leader reports daily to the grounds supervisor regarding work accomplished and future team work required. This position may participate in landscape design and construction, as well as hardscape design and construction. The Grounds Team Leader - Plant Specialist may be called upon to assist with plant selection and may assist with maintenance questions in other zones of campus. The plant specialist should be knowledgeable about commonly used landscape trees, and shrubs.

In addition, this position will be responsible for all maintenance of a geographical area of campus including: pruning, weeding, pest control, planting of trees, shrubs, and perennials, mulching, fertilizing, and all aspects of maintaining trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials, mowing, weed-eating, snow removal, litter removal, and road/parking lot maintenance. Because of the extent of duties, an Agricultural/ Horticultural Specialist at UNC Asheville must be both knowledgeable and self-motivated. Each Agricultural/Horticultural Specialist must be an independent worker, and must be extremely capable and responsible.

Minimum Education/Experience/Skills
High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver's License may be required.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
A valid driver's license is preferred. Experience in large scale landscape installation, including knowledge of the proper procedures for the installation of trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials are preferred. Advanced knowledge of native plant species and their use in the landscape is preferred. The preferred candidate will have experience in leadership of small crews, including strong communication skills.

Time management skills are needed to assess daily priorities of self and others in order to maintain a quality environment for the campus community. Advanced knowledge of grounds maintenance work and landscape construction.
Work Schedule and Hours
Typical hours will vary between Monday-Friday from 7am-4pm and Tuesday -Saturday from 7am-4pm. Some evening and weekend hours may be needed to meet the needs of the department, winter weather, or during special events. The employee in this position is identified as critical personnel in accordance with UNC Asheville policy.
