Organizational Unit Overview | The Division of University Advancement, under oversight by the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement, is the friend-raising and fund-raising arm of the general academic areas of the university; therefore, all of its activities are designed to generate support, financial or otherwise, for East Carolina University. The units and subunits within the division work together to identify, involve, cultivate, and solicit alumni and friends of the university to gain financial support from the private sector for the purpose of enhancing the long- and short-range growth and welfare of the university. University Advancement is comprised of the East Carolina Alumni Association, the ECU Foundation, and the ECU Health Foundation. The areas of Advancement Services, Donor Relations, and Strategic Initiatives support the operations of the Division of University Advancement and its associated foundations. The unit oversees the university's alumni and donor database (Agilon ONE and any replacement CRM) and all associated systems, such as Anthology Encompass, Crescendo, Mongoose Cadence, and ThankView. Advancement Services and Donor Relations assists with data integrations, updates and verifies alumni records, manages donor prospect tracking systems, oversees endowment and impact reporting, oversees communication and social media for the division, provides leadership for division stewardship processes and events, and oversees strategic initiatives across the division. |
Job Duties | The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Advancement Operations, a position that reports to the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement and serves as an active member of University Advancement's senior leadership team. The AVC leads three essential teams - Advancement Services, Donor Relations, and Strategic Initiatives - to create and sustain strategic customer-service-oriented and donor-centric operations and communications that support the Division of University Advancement and its partners. These efforts are intended to broaden the engagement of the University's stakeholders and increase gift revenue from individuals and organizations supporting the University's priorities. The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Advancement Operations should have experience in advancement information technology, personnel management, budget oversight, campaign planning, donor relations, strategic communications, and events. The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Advancement Operations will have:
PERCENTAGE OF TOTAL TIME
30% - Strategic Operations and Infrastructure Management Collaborate closely with the Vice Chancellor to set and implement University Advancement standard operating procedures, goals, and budgets. Oversee the planning, operation, and evaluation of the technology infrastructure supporting university-wide development, marketing, and alumni relations activities. Ensure compliance with industry standards, VSE and CASE guidelines, and UNC System and ECU policies. Develop and oversee campaign and initiative tracking mechanisms to ensure milestone achievement. Utilize analytics to drive success across the division. 25% - Administrative Leadership Provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight, including budget and staffing, for Advancement Services, Donor Relations, and Strategic Initiatives functions and operations supporting the strategic plans of the university, the division, and associated entities. Develop and communicate a vision for Advancement Services, Donor Relations, and Strategic Initiatives to stakeholders across the university. Serve as a vital member of the University Advancement Leadership Team. Attend various events throughout the year, including occasional overnight and weekend travel. 25% - Marketing and Communication Oversight Develop integrated marketing strategies and activity plans for key programs to achieve campaign and initiative objectives. Oversee, track, and enhance communications, stewardship, donor relations, events, and promotions across all audiences. Maintain a strong understanding of and ensure implementation of industry-specific best practices and standards. 15% - Collaboration and Relationship Building Work collaboratively with deans and senior administrators to foster broad, coordinated involvement and cooperation regarding gifts and records management, outreach, donor relations, alumni and donor CRM systems, policies, and procedures. Provide leadership and direction internally to build a culture of customer service, achievement, professionalism, and efficiency while coaching and mentoring staff members. Maintain a close working relationship with Financial Services. 5% - Other duties as assigned |
Minimum Education/Experience | A Master's degree and 5 years of demonstrated progressive experience in a fundraising environment, or a Bachelor's degree and 7 years of demonstrated progressive experience in a fundraising environment. Thorough understanding of and experience in comprehensive campaigning from organizations at the $100 million-plus level. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment within a highly complex organizational structure. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education | Graduate degree, or extensive related professional experience. Experience working with executive leadership to advance strategic priorities. Exceptional interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to express and recognize ideas and opportunities and communicate goals and objectives clearly. Tolerance for and ability to work productively in the context of ambiguity, uncertainty, and change. |
