Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Cultural Resources Office (CRO) is seeking a full-time, term Research Specialist. The Research Specialist provides key support to the Director of the CRO, conducts research and responds to external requests for information.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct comprehensive research on human remains in the Museum's collections from outside the United States using archival documents, published literature and other sources.
  • Create inventories for remains that originate from outside the United States.
  • Assist the Director of Cultural Resources and other repatriation staff in responding to external requests for information on biological collections.
  • Manage records of consultations in the CRO portion of the division of Anthropology database.
  • Draft periodic meeting minutes.
  • Manage activities that necessitate proximity to and handling of human remains and other sensitive items.

The expected salary range for the Research Specialist is $55,000/annual - $62,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in anthropology or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in anthropology.
  • Experience at an archaeological field school.
  • Experience working with osteological and archaeological collections.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
