Summary

Design, implement, and evaluate infrastructure, data processors, and persistence from concept through production stage, and ability to approach problems in a creative manner. They are responsible for ensuring availability, usability, and integrity of data, along with maintaining data ingestion and processing systems. The Principal Engineer leads the Data Engineering technology strategy and architecture including alignment across multiple teams.

Essential Functions

  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and AWS 'big data' technologies.
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency, and other key business performance metrics.
  • Work with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
  • Keep our data separated and secure across national boundaries through multiple data centers and AWS regions.
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader.
  • Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
  • May maintain and extend Data Governance and Data catalogs as appropriate. Aid in tracking data utilization to shape enhancements to the Data Catalog.
  • Isolate unhealthy data to retain data catalog health.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in the domains of cloud computing and data science.
  • Demonstrates the support for company culture in their daily actions
  • Will at times be asked to mentor interns or less experienced employees

Qualifications

  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
  • Experience building and optimizing 'big data' data pipelines, architectures, and data sets.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
  • Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large, disconnected datasets.
  • Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable 'big data' data stores.
  • Understanding the development, persistence, and application of Machine Learning datasets is beneficial.
  • Expert engineer with 12+ years of career experience, with bachelor's degree. 10+ years with master's degree. 6+ years with PHD. Or equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate will also have experience using the following software/tools:
    • Cloud Computing (Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure).
    • Proficiency in Automation, Provisioning, and Orchestration tools (Gitlab Pipelines, Terraform, Ansible, etc.)
    • Big data tools: Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.
    • Relational SQL and NoSQL databases, including Postgres and Cassandra.
    • Data pipeline and workflow management tools: Azkaban, Luigi, Airflow, etc.
    • AWS cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, Redshift
    • Stream-processing systems: Storm, Spark-Streaming, etc.
    • Object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Java, C++, Scala, etc.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Furthers knowledge of profession through continued education and/or providing mentorship. Contributes to profession through writing white papers. Recognized externally by peers as an expert in engineering.
  • Ability to apply design theory and methodology.
  • Well-developed problem analysis and problem-solving techniques.
  • Team player who is self-motivated, hands on with projects,and has ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and leadership staff across a wide variety of specialties.
