Job Description

Your Opportunity as the Senior Specialist, Quality Assurance

The Senior Specialist, Quality Assurance plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and compliance of our food packaging materials. This position is responsible for implementing supplier food safety and quality programs and procedures. Focusing on maintaining high-quality standards for packaging materials used in the food industry. The successful candidate will collaborate with new and existing suppliers, internal teams, and stakeholders to uphold rigorous regulatory, quality and safety standards.

Location: Orrville, OH

Work Arrangements: Hybrid, 30% in office expectations (Tues, Wed, Thurs on "core weeks" - 6 days per month)

Key Responsibilities:

Supplier Management and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance and continuous improvement in the approval process for qualifying new packaging suppliers.

  • Facilitate discussions between the JMS plant and suppliers when quality or food safety issues arise.

  • Collect, maintain, review, and approve documentation related to packaging suppliers and their materials in our TraceGains system.

  • Keep an updated Approved Vendor List for packaging usage in Smucker products.

Quality and Food Safety

  • Manage quality and food safety expectations within the existing packaging material supply chain.

  • Support internal packaging material sampling and testing protocols, ensuring data analysis and corrective actions.

  • Investigate any quality issues related to packaging materials.

  • Implement corrective and preventive actions (sCARs) for packaging quality.

  • Identify, classify, and report deviations related to food packaging.

  • Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturers to assess out-of-specification results and ensure timely corrective actions.

  • Handle complex major deviations and complaints related to packaging.

Document Control and Deviations

  • Manage document control, change control, and deviations specific to packaging.

  • Handling deviations related to packaging; review investigations, CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions) management and ensuring timely corrective actions

What we are looking for:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Packaging Technology, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.

  • 3 years of progressive experience Quality Assurance/Food Safety

  • Solid working knowledge of quality assurance, food manufacturing, packaging, processing, and distribution.

  • Detail-oriented and process-focused with strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong ability to work in a cross-functional and collaborative environment with multiple disciplines.

  • Ability to communicate clearly within the organization and externally.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-starter; takes charge with a positive and proactive attitude.

  • Ability to lead multiple projects concurrently.

  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Additional skills and experience that we think would make someone successful in this role:

  • 1 year of quality experience in a Food manufacturing environment with Manufacturing, QA , Logistics, or R&D experience

  • Certification as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (human or animal food) or HACCP experience.

  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and application of quality systems principles (i.e. GFSI standards / requirements: BRCGS, SQF, ISO 22000, FSC22

  • Familiarity with management systems like Prodika and TraceGains

  • Collaborating with packaging suppliers and manufacturers.
