Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Campus Health (CH) is a multi-specialty ambulatory college health clinic providing quality, and affordable health care for eligible students and spouses. Annually, CH has more than 80,000 patient encounters, which includes Primary Care and Women's Health as well as specialty clinics in sports medicine, orthopedics, gynecology, physical therapy, counseling and psychological services, travel clinic and allergy clinic. Weekend acute care is provided from 8-5 PM. On site ancillary services include pharmacy, OTC pharmacy, Student Stores pharmacy, medical laboratory, and radiology.

Campus Health has been continuously accredited since 1986 by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. All personnel are trained in the concepts and principles of Performance Improvement and serve as team members and leaders in shaping and defining the organization as it strives to provide quality and safe care.

Campus Health collaborates with Student Wellness and Campus Recreation and other Student Affairs partners to provide education and outreach to assist in keeping the campus population healthy.

Education and research comprise another important function of CH. CH provides clinical rotations and practicums for students in the School of Education, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Public Health, Department of Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Health and Radiology. In addition, CH serves as a research site for a number of faculty and graduate student grants and contracts, where CH staff participates with the principal investigators across a variety of medical specialties.
Position Summary
Position duties will consist of: -Assessing each patient encounter. -Obtaining brief medical history, and documenting in electronic health record. -Assists the medical provider with medical procedures and gynecological exams. -Initiates and reinforces appropriate patient education that promotes health and prevents accidents. -Instructs patient in discharge instructions, return clinical visits and arranges appropriate resources referrals within the community, if indicated. -Communicates any significant changes in the condition of the patient to the health provider. -Prepares and administers oral, aerosol, sub-cutaneous, topical, intramuscular and intravenous medications. Initiates and maintains intravenous therapy. -Initiates emergency care (Doctor Stat, seizures, etc.) as outlined by policies and in procedures. -Performs venipuncture for ordered laboratory tests, follows process for preparing and transport of specimens to laboratory. -Performs specified waived lab tests in the clinical area. -Performs telephone triage with student population. -Coordinates unit functions, monitors patient flow, implements changes and assists in problem solving on a day-to-day basis. Indirect duties: -Checks emergency and patient equipment as outlined in unit procedures. -Maintains accurate controlled substance records in conjunction with the Pharmacy policy. -Acts as a liaison between CHS and UNC Hospitals when receiving and or transferring patients between the two institutions. -Promotes a safe and clean environment for the delivery of quality patient care. -Maintains acceptable stock levels as determined by the Nursing Director.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The nature of the Professional Nurse required flexibility for change, knowledge of nursing theories and practices, understanding of computer technology systems and programs, and the ability to adapt to advances in medicine. Advances in medical and computer technologies are on-going and complex that results in new approaches to the delivery of patient care. As a result of these advances, standards of practice may change requiring revision of policies and procedures.
On a daily basis, physical effort and stamina are required for the delivery of direct and indirect patient care. Examples include transporting, bending, lifting, standing for long periods of time, and monitoring of patient demand throughout the clinics that require extensive walking throughout the workday.
Be able to understand Instruction includes medical orders written or verbal by the health care provider, written agency policies and detailed procedures, reference manuals, nursing guidelines and standards set forth by the Nurse Practice Act of North Carolina.
Precision, exactness and accuracy are essential to the practice of nursing care.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. Prefer experience in an acute/ambulatory care/office-based setting, administration of intravenous therapy. Experience with College Health helpful.
