Position Summary | SkillSet is an evolving community based outreach and skills building program at STEAM Studio, UNC Asheville's 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art making space. The program is designed to create access to the tool and material literacy that is foundational to maker-based STEAM education. From computer aided drafting to power tools and CNC machining students learn design, development, iteration, engineering, craft, and the science behind it all. SkillSet's mission is to eliminate gender, socioeconomic, and ability based barriers to STEAM education. The employee in this role should be able to create inclusive and accessible programming for diverse students and staff. This is a new position that is funded by the Dogwood Health Trust's WNC After 3 PM initiative grant. The grant is intended to expand the Skillset Off-Site Program project allowing us to engage more deeply with the broader western North Carolina community in delivering STEAM literacy and life skills. Over the five years of this project, the expansion will increase access to and capacity of high quality, out-of-school programming for young people in western NC by expanding the number of Skillset's after school classes and summer camps that focus on project-based STEAM curriculum in the Dogwood Health Trust priority region. This role will create and maintain relationships with community partners throughout the 18 county Western North Carolina region and Qualla Boundary. They will schedule, manage, administer, and deliver out-of-school-time programming in collaboration with the SkillSet Coordinator serving as the grant program lead and other STEAM staff. In addition to developing and teaching workshops, afterschool programming and summer camps, the SkillSet Instructor will work with the SkillSet Coordinator and Director of STEAM Studio to manage class budgets, purchase tools and materials and help maintain equipment and organization. This position is grant funded for 4.5 years. Efforts will be made to secure continued funding. |
