Overview:

The Design Engineer III will identify needs, design, and develop solutions for advanced UCC systems that integrate multi-vendor systems using a common advanced communications core. This position will provide customer-facing technical assistance in support of business development, sales, and project activities for the UCC Division and is responsible for designing and delivering solutions while applying technical competencies to ascertain sustainable competitive advantage. UNICOM Government UCC engineers have a great deal of autonomy and are expected to be able to manage their time efficiently and effectively.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Complete the development and completion of the proposal spreadsheet. Peer review proposal spreadsheets prepared by others for completeness, accuracy, and conformance to given requirements. Write technical descriptions explaining the scope of work to be performed for both internal and external proposal and project requirements.
  • Sort through unclear and unspecific requirements to drive a solution.
  • Develop and/or supervise the development of project drawings and/or sketches as required for submittal and/or installation. Document and maintain the documentation and maintenance of project record drawings and as-built drawings. This shall include but not be limited to outside plant wiring, floor plans, riser diagrams, details, block diagrams, wire run lists, List of Materials, etc.
  • Assist in researching via the Internet or other means, gather and properly assemble, in original form, for reproduction specification material for submittals. Peer review engineering design packages, configurations, and job books prepared by others for completeness and accuracy.
  • Supervise and/or conduct and document site surveys. Generate site survey reports to be used in the design and/or deployment of systems and or equipment. Develop and/or direct the development of reports to be used in the design and/or deployment of systems and or equipment.
  • Generate and/or direct the compilation of project List of Material (LOM) lists or "take-off" using plans, specifications, and requirements provided. Peer review material lists prepared by others for accuracy and conformance to contract documents.
  • Work within tight timescales as part of a high-performing team and complete assigned proposal and project tasks within budget and schedule.
  • Assist in developing, completing, and maintaining project schedules as required.
  • Assembles project engineering and installation job books, including Theory of Operations, drawings, and User Acceptance Test results.
  • Provide guidance and assist the installation personnel in the implementation and deployment of the engineered solutions in assigned projects.
  • Assist with the production of training manuals and final documentation of assigned projects.
  • Represent the engineering group in project team reviews, providing information, suggestions, and recommendations.
  • Provide technical guidance to colleagues and other teams by participating in sales presentations, conference calls, and customer meetings as needed to generate profitable revenue opportunities.
  • Research, develop and apply new and existing technologies to create new products or methodologies or enhance and improve existing products or methodologies.
  • Responsible for reading, understanding, and following all company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain, through self-motivation, discipline, and focus a leading-edge level of functional/technical skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, and decision-making skills.
  • Participate in team project reviews.
  • Generate and execute test and acceptance test plans in-house and on-site.
  • Work effectively across cross-functional lines, in coordination with others involved in operations, marketing, sales, finance, logistics, and maintenance services.
  • Contribute to the development and ensure adherence of engineering processes and the UNICOM Government UCC CAD Standard to bring continuity to the exchange and usability of engineering data and drawings within the organization and its customers.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of emerging trends in the UCC industry as a whole.
  • Complete the training and certification requirements to advance to other levels in the department.
  • Familiar with audio/video Standards and protocols.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of multiple classification audiovisual switching systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge loading configurations and files to equipment platforms such as Crestron, AMX, Extron, Biamp, Cisco, Poly, Clearone, etc.
  • Train clients to take over built-out infrastructure.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with clients.
  • Comply with UNICOM Government Process Implementation Policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS in EE or related degree and 8 to 10 years experience, or 13+ years experience in UCC.
  • Willingness to follow a plan of activities, execute with punctuality and attention to detail and work as a team member.

  • Willingness to establish an engineering and installation plan of activities and execute with punctuality and attention to detail and work as a team member.
  • Willingness to train, direct and mentor other engineers and technicians.
  • Proficiency in Visio and/or AutoCAD.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Advanced industry and/or vendor certification with manufacturers such as CISCO, Poly, Crestron, and AMX are required.
  • AVIXA CTS-I or CTS-D required.

Travel Requirements:

This position requires approximately 25% travel.

Security Clearance:

  • Must have current U.S. Government SECRET or TOP SECRET Personnel Security Clearance
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must also be able to maintain a U.S. Government SECRET or TOP SECRET security clearance.

Work Environment:

This position will be mostly in the office. However, this position requires approximately 25% travel to various government and/or client locations as business demands arise.
