Job Description Summary

Provides protection to Reynolda House Museum of American Art as well as guests and staff from criminal activity, fire, safety hazards or other dangerous situations. Monitors activities within the museum, conducts roving patrols, and responds to incidents as directed. Responsibilities involve dynamic interpersonal interaction with Reynolda House visitors, staff, and vendors during normal museum hours as well as special functions and after hours and weekend events. Demonstrates approachability and confidence and makes all feel welcome as a reflection of the Reynolda brand.

About Reynolda

Reynolda, in Winston-Salem, N.C., is a rare gem among the nation's cultural institutions and historic greenspaces. The 50-year-old museum at the center of Reynolda's 180 acres, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, presents a renowned art collection in a historic and incomparable setting: the original 1917 interiors of the country manor of R. J. Reynolds. Spanning 250 years, the collection is an uncompromisingly selective one, a chronology of American art, with each artist represented by one work of major significance. The collection was assembled by the unerring eye of Barbara Babcock Millhouse, granddaughter of R. J. and Katharine Reynolds. The Reynolda experience includes a free app called Reynolda Revealed; touring exhibitions in the Museum's Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing; formal gardens, conservatory and walking trails of Reynolda Gardens; and more than 25 of the estate's original buildings repurposed as shops and restaurants in Reynolda Village.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains knowledge of current policies, procedures to protect the collection, staff, and visitors to Reynolda.

  • Actively monitors all building areas to ensure the safety / security of the collection, staff, and guests. Will take action based on observations as required.

  • Detects problems and reports information to appropriate personnel via the chain of command.

  • Protects the collection from unauthorized tampering, handling, defacing, touching or theft.

  • Responds to fire alarms, intrusion alarms, and panic alarms.

  • Responds to medical emergencies; administers aid as required.

  • Receives reports of and responds to, security issues, safety issues, and incidents. Investigates and completes detailed incident reports on various situations as they arise. Makes prompt notifications on various situations as required.

  • Responds appropriately to guest conflicts as the first level of conflict management.

  • Regulates and controls traffic through gallery spaces during regular museum operation and special events.

  • Assists in the evacuation of the museum in the event of an emergency that threatens life or property in accordance with current emergency procedures; ensures security of the area.

Other Functions:

  • Conducts opening and closing building inspections.


Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • High School graduate or G.E.D. with two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to successfully complete security training, first aid/CPR training, and other training as assigned by the Director of Security.

  • Ability to use a computer for multiple functions to include but not limited to; report writing, email communication, timekeeping and scheduling.

  • Ability to work flexible shifts including; evenings, weekends and holidays. (Weekend availability is required for this position)

  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare accurate / detailed reports.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or other emergency services is preferred.

Accountabilities:

  • Works under general supervision.

  • Reports to the Security Manager.

Physical Requirements:

Performs bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling, reaching from ground level to overhead, pushing and pulling up to 20 pounds; must be able to visually observe and monitor Museum building, grounds, security cameras and other related equipment; will be subjected to long periods of standing or walking. May be called upon to physically assist guests in an emergency or evacuation.

Environmental Conditions:

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; subject to occasional extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards.
