The Role

We're looking for an analytical and critical thinker to work in our Underwriting Department as an Underwriter. Reporting to the Director, Underwriting, you will be responsible for underwriting all types of medical professional liability policies, including underwriting risks for current policyholders and new applicants while assuring that all company underwriting standards and objectives are met. You will mainly underwrite for accounts in the North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia markets.

Key Result Areas

  • Select and renew profitable business through risk, premium, and claims analysis within the assigned authority levels and adherence to the Underwriting manual.
  • Manage overall responsibility for assigned territory in collaboration with designated Underwriting Assistant
  • Collaborate with the SVP, VP, or Director of Underwriting in the development of proposals exceeding the underwriter's authority level.
  • Prepare new business and renewal quotations utilizing the current system and other rating applications and methodologies as they become available.
  • Collaborate with managers and colleagues in other departments to achieve growth goals and retention targets.
  • Provide direct customer service to the customer or alternative distribution channels, taking ownership until resolution is reached.
  • Participate in Underwriting and Claims Committee meetings, as appropriate.
  • Participate in virtual or in-person agent/broker meetings related to specific accounts or overall underwriting discussions.
  • Collaborate with Business Development team to build, strengthen, and manage relationships with agents/brokers.
  • Participate in the onboarding of new underwriting staff.
  • Participate in educational activities to expand knowledge and expertise in insurance and medical professional liability underwriting, as well as to meet continuing education requirements for licensure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and/or high school diploma with equivalent work experience
  • Three to five years of property and casualty underwriting experience required.
  • Three to five years of medical professional liability underwriting experience or experience with claims-made business insurance underwriting experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in insurance-related field
