Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of this role includes but is not limited to:
The Fire Safety Technician is a professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of fire alarm systems to ensure their proper functioning and compliance with safety regulations. Their duties typically include inspecting and testing fire alarm systems, troubleshooting issues, replacing faulty components, and documenting all work performed in accordance with relevant standards and codes. Fire Safety Technicians may also be involved in conducting periodic inspections and providing recommendations for system upgrades or enhancements to improve overall safety and performance. Additionally, they often collaborate with other professionals such as electricians, building engineers, and fire safety inspectors to coordinate installation projects and ensure compliance with building codes and regulations. Effective communication skills and attention to detail are essential in this role to accurately diagnose problems, communicate findings to clients or team members, and ensure that fire alarm systems operate reliably to protect lives and property in the event of an emergency.

Requirements and Preferences

Work Schedule Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week on site at UNC
Other Work/Responsibilities

  • Proficiency in identifying and, when necessary, resolving or providing recommendations for non-standard or more complex issues with electronic devices, subsystems, and systems post-installation or failure.
  • Ability to troubleshoot effectively, evaluate available options, and select appropriate actions by considering potential outcomes.
  • Capability to utilize specialized test equipment for troubleshooting and repairing non-standard electronic devices and systems.
  • Aptitude for conducting electronic literature research to modify, construct, or interface electronic devices.
  • Quick response to system issues with the proper tools and equipment
  • Diagnosing and fixing system problems using laptops and electronic testing gear
  • Preventing recurring failures by pinpointing defective components
  • Reviewing and approving system changes before implementation

Minimum Experience/Education
  • Recent experience in the Fire Alarm industry or similar industry to fire safety such as Security Systems,Building Management Systems (BMS), Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)., Emergency Management and Response, and Construction and Engineering: Professionals in these fields often work closely with fire safety experts to ensure that buildings are constructed or renovated to meet fire safety codes and standards.

  • 1 year of working in fire safety or similar industry





Department Required Skills
  • Recent experience in the Fire Alarm industry
  • Proficiency in programming, servicing, and repairing Fire Detection and Suppression systems, including:
    • Sprinkler systems (wet and dry)
    • Pre-action and deluge systems
    • Standpipe systems
    • Fire pumps
    • Chemical suppression systems
    • Familiarity with Security, CCTV, and Card Access systems
    • Knowledge of Proprietary Central Alarm Receiving Stations
    • Willingness to understand and apply various codes and standards, such as:
      • NFPA13, 14, 20, 25, 70, 72
      • Life Safety 101
      • NC Dept. of Insurance requirements for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
      • NC Dept. of Insurance requirements for Fire Sprinkler Systems
      • ADA requirements













Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Experience conducting safety inspections and fire alarms is preferred but not required
  • Low voltage experience preferred but not required
  • Experience conducting fire alarm systems/sprinkler systems is preferred but not required
