The Physics and Astronomy Department at Appalachian State University is looking for a Teacher-in-Residence (TIR). Successful applicants for the TIR position will be experienced teachers of public high school physics.
Candidates are especially encouraged to apply if they:
(a) can show evidence of teaching excellence at the high school level;
(b) possess a strong background in physics education and pedagogy;
are committed to increasing the number of physics teachers;
(d) are master's degree holders and/or National Board Certified teachers.

Description of the Department or Unit
The department offers a B.A. in Physics, a B.S. in Physics with a concentration in Applied Physics, and a BS in Physics with a concentration in Secondary Education. Additionally, the department offers an M.S. in Engineering Physics. The faculty includes 12.5 TT and 10 full-time NTT members. Both undergraduate and graduate programs are consistently ranked among the largest in the country by the AIP when compared to other Masters granting institutions: enrollment exceeds 150 undergraduate majors, and 25 master's students. Department facilities include staffed machine and electronics shops; nanoscience imaging, fabrication and characterization facilities; ion trapping, optics and biophysics laboratories; an applied electrostatics lab; a suite of atmospheric instrumentation; and research and student observatories. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The TIR will work with the department to increase the number of physics secondary education majors and improve the retention of those majors through advising and engaging mentoring experiences.

This includes:
i) fostering and developing relationships with the local school systems to support student teacher experiences and community colleges for recruitment,
ii) supporting the observations and mentoring of students in their internships and student teaching, and iii) supporting our departmental Learning Assistance Program.

The position requires a minimum half time (6 contact hour) teaching load per semester covering courses such as physics and/or science teacher education courses, some of which may be team taught.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
