McAdams is seeking an energetic planning professional to join our Planning + Design team as a Senior Urban Planner in North Carolina (Raleigh). Working in a collaborative team environment, alongside Mitchell Silver, FAICP, Hon ASLA, Principal for Urban Planning, this person will be responsible for helping grow our urban planning practice.

Position Purpose

The selected candidate will collaborate with the Planning and Design team and other services and market sectors within the firm to lead the pursuit and execution of urban and community planning projects. This position requires exceptional technical, communication, management, and leadership skills to pursue and execute high-quality deliverables for clients throughout the U.S. This position will collaborate with and lead teams to produce high quality plans, designs, reports, graphics, documents, and materials related to various projects within our national practice. The urban planning position would primarily focus on public sector projects for communities across the U.S. including area plans, downtown plans, corridor studies, system plans, visioning and strategic plans, and other short and long-term planning projects. To lead and support a team delivering planning projects, the successful candidate must have a comprehensive understanding of the planning process, public engagement, various inventories and assessments, data analysis, policy audits, site investigation data, and gap analysis and other tools as a basis for making plan recommendations and action items.

Essential Functions + Responsibilities

  • Lead project pursuit efforts by collaborating with planning and design, marketing, and other teams in the production of highly competitive, request for qualifications proposals for community planning projects;
  • Work with the planning and design team to lead the delivery of high quality short and long-term planning documents;
  • Lead and review the completion of data analysis, narratives, conceptual design, due diligence research, site analysis, GIS mapping, master planning and other planning tasks;
  • Lead dynamic teams of planners, designers and other professionals as a project manager and maintain the key point of contact with clients;
  • Manage staff, collaborate with direct reports, assist with career development, annual reviews, coaching and mentoring;
  • Deliver presentations to elected officials, advisory boards, stakeholders and the public;
  • Develop and execute comprehensive community engagement plans;
  • Work with leadership staff to create strategic planning goals that advance the firms growth in a national community planning practice;
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team;
  • Be willing to travel for projects, training, and company events;
  • Contribute to the overall success and happiness of the team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master's Degree in Urban / Regional Planning or related field from an accredited program
  • 8-12 years of urban planning or related experience
  • Ability to work within a collaborative team environment, communicate effectively and mange a project team
  • Strong written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in the development of project planning documents
  • Experience in leading a dynamic team of planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to deliver quality services and deliverables
  • Strong interest in design of the built environment and placemaking for different land uses
  • Commitment to team success and personal career growth
  • Possess excellent organizational and time management skills
  • AutoCAD, Adobe Suite software, ArcGIS and Microsoft Office Suite general understanding
  • AICP licensure
