As a Senior Product Engineer, you will drive improvements in Electrification Distribution Solutions (ELDS) in Pinetops, North Carolina. In this role you will be responsible for technical support related to the development and production of dry type current and voltage transformers with ratings ranging from 600V to 35kV. The role also includes reviewing products and processes to improve safety, estimating production costs and recommending design changes to simplify production processes, reduce costs, improve product quality, and meet special customer requirements. You will perform a variety of complex engineering assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering as it pertains to the design and analysis of transformers. In addition, you must be well versed in related engineering disciplines to support overall product design, analysis, and manufacture. Assignments typically require the use of advanced and innovative techniques as well as the ability to effectively communicate with people from various backgrounds and education levels. Proactively seek and implement initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.

Your responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate all aspects of medium voltage transformers, including manufacturing processes, individual components, application requirements, and special customer requirements
  • Work directly with testing and manufacturing associates to fully understand internal manufacturing processes to ensure employee safety, improve quality, and reduce lead times and costs
  • Create, review and maintain production specifications such as BOM's, production instructions, and testing requirements
  • Work directly with sales, product management, quality, and design engineering to address customer concerns, identify potential product improvements, participate in design reviews, and launch new products in manufacturing
  • Offer optimized design suggestions for components and subassemblies such as brackets, cores, winding assemblies and various other components that result in safety, quality, or cost improvements.
  • Act as principal investigator or lead a cross functional team investigating product issues, including field failures, internal testing failures, manufacturing issues, and customer complaints. Must be capable of developing and carrying out specific plans for determining root cause and implementing corrective action
  • Review application requirements and/or customer specific application requests and recommend changes to specifications and drawings needed to meet these requirements. Design in house test plans / procedures to ensure finished unit meets applicable internal, customer, and industry specifications
Your background

  • Bachelor degree plus 5 years related experience; Bachelors in electrical or mechanical engineering preferred. NOTE: Based upon transformer design or manufacturing experience, a bachelor degree in other STEM fields may be considered
  • 3+ years of transformer or other electro-mechanical device design / manufacturing experience or experience in field applications of medium voltage IT's. Knowledgeable in the applicable technical requirements of medium voltage transformers, including the IEEE standard, UL and CSA requirements, preferred
  • Expertise in system application phenomena such as resonance frequencies, ferro-resonance, VFT mitigation, etc. along with potential mitigation strategies for such phenomena, preferred
  • Ability to effectively use the following computer applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SolidWorks, AutoCAD
  • Good communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with individuals from varying educational and cultural backgrounds
  • Capable of using English as primary communication language. Secondary languages include Spanish and French
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
