Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in German or German Studies or a related field by July 1, 2024;
  • Native or near-native proficiency in German and English;
  • Experience teaching multiple levels of college-level German with both a language and a culture focus;
  • Evidence of an active record of research, scholarship, or creative activity in German, German Studies, or related fields;
  • Commitment to supporting the German program in outreach and co-curricular activities.
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
The department especially seeks someone with
  • evidence of excellence in teaching;
  • experience in supporting/developing outreach in German K-16 and to professional organizations;
  • experience leading or developing study abroad programs.

The department is interested in applicants with
  • interest in collaborating with General Education (e.g. First-Year Seminar, Literature in Translation ); and developing cross-disciplinary opportunities that recruit for German;
  • interest in cultivating undergraduate research and scholarship opportunities;
  • interest in collaborating on programming for the Language and Culture Community, the department's Residential Learning Community (RLC).

Description of the Department or Unit
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is home to a diverse faculty, and offers a variety of courses in language, culture, literature, and linguistics. These courses support General Education as well as the department's programs, which include majors in East Asian Languages and Cultures, French and Francophone Studies, German, Spanish and Hispanic Studies, and initial licensure programs for K-12 French and Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and TESL/Applied Linguistics, two years of instruction in Latin and Portuguese, and graduate programs in French and Spanish K-12 and College Teaching.

The department collaborates with the Honors College, the International Business program, the Reich College of Education, and the interdisciplinary Global Studies program within the College of Arts and Sciences. The department also works closely with Appalachian's Office of International Education and Development, offering short-term faculty-led programs abroad and a large number of semester- and year-long exchange programs.

The department and the College of Arts and Sciences are committed to supporting the ongoing professional development of all faculty.

  • Support the German program in co-curricular activities.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
