Job Description

The Formulation Technology Group (FTG) is looking for a Staff Formulation Scientist to join our team.  FTG is the innovation research hub within Syngenta’s Product Technology & Engineering (PT&E) function, and our core mission is to develop and deploy new formulation technologies and fundamental understanding for agrochemical formulations for the crop protection market.  Key research themes include: 1) competitive differentiation and robust product design for faster and effective go-to-market strategy, 2) optimized biological performance with enabling formulation technology to enhance active ingredient biodelivery and efficacy, and 3) materials selection and design for improved product safety, sustainability, and registrability with regulatory agencies.

As a Staff Formulation Scientist in FTG, you will conduct hands-on laboratory research both independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to design, prepare, and characterize novel formulations to meet technical project criteria.  These formulations are often multi-phase, complex mixtures of various chemistries to stabilize and enable bioefficacy of one or more active ingredients.  You will play an active role in discerning and defining technical project criteria as well, in consultation with Syngenta’s scientific and marketing communities.  Self-motivation, enthusiasm for practical laboratory work, excellent organization skills, strong scientific curiosity, and an ability to creatively solve technical problems are all critical for the role.

As Syngenta is a global biotechnology and chemical company, you will collaborate with colleagues across multiple functions and geographies, so careful attention to detail and excellent communication skills will also be key to your success.  We are looking for a scientist with a passion for learning and keeping current with technological advancements to innovate, exceed customer expectations, and actively contribute to Syngenta’s business success.

Accountabilities:

  • Plan, organize, and conduct laboratory experiments to design and optimize active ingredient formulations, with project criteria across biology, marketing, regulatory, manufacturing, and supply chain disciplines.
  • Validate formulation robustness through rigorous physico-chemical characterization with a variety of analytical instrumentation and methods.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of other product development scientists and engineers to define and execute project goals, based on historical or new technical challenges and opportunities.
  • Transfer knowledge and expertise to other scientists through effective coaching, interpersonal skills, and both oral and written communication, to deploy early-stage research innovation outcomes within later-stage product development.
  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, while maintaining and strengthening a personal network of colleagues to progress project work.
  • Recognize opportunities for proprietary advantage and pursue protection of intellectual property in coordination with Legal partners.
  • Lead and prioritize multiple concurrent projects, while demonstrating organizational skills for time management and flexibility to adapt to changing project directions or scopes.
  • Pursue internal and external learning opportunities and apply new scientific disciplines, strategies, or technologies to ongoing and future work.

This is a onsite position located in Greensboro, NC.

  • Familiarity with bioassays or biological systems along with manufacturing and scale-up principles is also a plus.
  • Enthusiasm for collaborating with multi-functional teams of technical and non-technical members, within and outside of one’s area of expertise, to deliver high quality products to the customer.
  • Aptitude and willingness to coach and influence others, while demonstrating empathy to understand other perspectives.
  • Proficiency in experimental design and method development, with an ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Self-motivation and proactivity to design, execute, and deliver experiments and projects, with a passion for creative problem-solving.
  • Adaptability to changes in project criteria and receptiveness to new information and perspectives.
