Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
The Chair of the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) Department is the academic leader and administrative leader of the Department. The CAEE Department Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering and is a member of the College's Leadership Team.

The CAEE Department Chair, working in collaboration with the CAEE faculty and staff, is responsible for the success, relevance, and continued progression of the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department and the competitiveness of its graduates. This charge includes ensuring the progression of the department's research, teaching, and service mission; and working with constituents to ensure the vibrancy, operations, synergistic collaboration, and competitiveness of the department; as well as leveraging a department strategic plan to achieve measurable goals. The CAEE Chair is also responsible for budget development, management and allocation; the assessment and accreditation of CAEE programs, ensuring the relevance and execution of the instruction and research of the department, and promoting the Department through alumni, donor, and corporate engagement.

The College of Engineering (COE), with over 2,300 students, has 5 Doctoral programs, 8 Masters of Science Degree programs, and EAC ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Architectural, Bio-, Biological, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a CAC ABET-accredited program Computer Science. The College's focus is on cultivating leaders who excel in academics, innovation, and research; where the 5 research cluster areas of the COE are Autonomous Systems, Cybersecurity and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability, Healthcare Applications and Complex Systems and Networks. The Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) offers BS degrees in Architectural Engineering, BS degrees in Civil Engineering, and MS degrees in Civil Engineering. The CAEE Department has 10 full-time faculty, 6 part time faculty, 4 full time staff; and an enrollment of 320 students. The graduate instruction and research of the department focuses on Environmental/Water Resources, Structures/Geotechnical, Transportation, Construction Management, and Energy Resources/Systems.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related discipline; and an academic record fitting of the Full Professor rank.
10+ years progressive accomplishments in civil or architectural engineering academic leadership and departmental change/transformation.
Proven administrative and leadership abilities, a strong record of scholarly work and extramural funding. The successful candidates will be a natural leader who knows how to bring teams of people together and support them in their efforts to accomplish important tasks on time and within budget.

Candidates should also be committed to advancing the academic and professional success of historically underrepresented populations in civil and architectural engineering. The next CAEE Department Chair should have a solid research portfolio in civil, architectural, and environmental engineering; collaborate well with colleagues; be forward thinking; and have relevant experiences in building win-win partnerships.
