GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Operating Room Manager, this incumbent supervises, coordinates, and operates specialty equipment in the Operating Room and maintains and coordinates the associated supply inventory and instrumentation needed for operation of the equipment. This employee also provides on-the-job education of the instrumentation and equipment for the Nursing staff in the various departments. Responsible for overseeing all laser cases in Tufts Medical Center and functioning as the dedicated laser operator for each case, unless an alternate staff member has been adequately trained to operate the laser in the areas where this is feasible and has been approved by the LSO. This position requires strong technical skills, knowledge of the surgical environment and patient care areas, good sterile technique, and an understanding of surgical procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Annual completion of laser safety training required for personnel using class 3B or 4 lasers. Has a good working knowledge of electrical safety, ANSI Z136.3 and American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery published standards, patient safety goals, and incorporates these into daily practice.
  • Dedicated laser operator for all cases in the OR and in all Tufts MC laser locations where direct laser operator has not been approved to operate lasers.
  • Ensures adequate supply and oversees use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Maintains PPE in good working order
  • Cleans eyewear between cases
  • Manages safety requirements and supply of X-ray shielding in the operating room, in collaboration with Radiology,
  • Manages X-ray badges and reporting
  • Sets up and organizes assignments of video equipment in the OR
  • Supplies video carts with printer paper and other items as needed
  • Clinical troubleshooting of equipment during procedures
  • Set up equipment for surgical procedures
  • Applicable documentation as required by accrediting bodies or according to regulations for individual equipment
  • Assist with procedure data collection and quality management as it pertains to the equipment
  • In collaboration with Service Leaders, supports new surgeons interested in using the technology.
  • Good working knowledge of microscopes and configures them as needed for cases
  • Coordinates working hours to meet the needs of scheduled laser use and to facilitate efficient and adequate utilization of available resources.
  • Available to meet on-call requirements.
  • Maintains collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.
  • Organize routine preventative maintenance schedule with Biomedical Engineering. Manage equipment failures, getting repairs completed and communication with stakeholders about any downtime and cases that may be impacted regarding malfunctioning equipment.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND
  • College hours in technical-related courses preferred. OR
  • Level of knowledge obtained through the completion of an Associates Degree or completion of a Certified Scrub Technician Program preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

1 year experience in a hospital or healthcare setting or in a setting using technical medical equipment preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

LICENSES, ETC.:

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Constantly expanding, stressful surgical environment and clinics with frequent contacts with the surgical team, physicians, and other hospital staff associated with patient care.
  • Most of work will take place in sterile operating room environment with possible exposure to radiation, lasers, electric shock, anesthesia gases, hazardous chemicals, sick patients/bodily substances, hepatitis, and other blood-borne diseases.
  • Work requires regular walking, standing, pushing and carrying of equipment and lifting and positioning of patients. Work also requires occasional computer keying, operation of electronic equipment, cleaning machinery/patient treatment instruments/ and equipment.
