Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in higher education or related field - or master's degree in any field with experience related to the position.
  • Expertise or a background in one or more of the following is required: (a) online and hybrid learning (b) assessment of student learning serving nontraditional learners (d) Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and/or Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER), (e) program evaluation, and/or (f) STEM discipline. Please speak to your qualifications for any of the above focus areas in your application.
  • Experience consulting with faculty; facilitating workshops, courses and learning communities; and leading initiatives to enhance teaching, learning, and student success.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the success of all faculty and students to include decreasing disparities across demographic groups.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively.
License/Certification Required

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree and/or credentials related to teaching, learning, curriculum development, assessment of learning, inclusive practices, educational development, faculty development or other relevant area.
  • Experience teaching, especially in institutions of higher education.
  • Experience teaching in multiple modalities: online, in-person, and hybrid.
  • Experience leading or facilitating initiatives, programs, projects, or grants that contribute to student access, learning, and success.
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse disciplines.
  • Experience in program planning, management, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Organizational and time management skills, including project management skills.
  • Experience and expertise in the assessment of educational development programming.
  • Evidence of participation in scholarly work related to teaching and learning in higher education.
  • Ability to develop cross-campus relationships that allow for connecting faculty members to appropriate resources that will support their overall success in the institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Educational Development Specialist in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Student Success (CETLSS) is the first point of contact for instructional/learning design, educational development, and initiatives connecting teaching to increased student success. Reporting to the Executive Director of CETLSS, the Educational Development Specialist will work as a member of the CETLSS team to support our mission. CETLSS is dedicated to growing excellence in teaching and learning, online instruction, civic engagement, and faculty mentoring and career support. The Center provides professional development to the campus community aimed at advancing faculty and student success. CETLSS is under the Division of Academic Affairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Consult with faculty on instruction, course design, application of learning technologies such as the university's LMS (Moodle), and solving teaching challenges for the successful development and delivery of quality in-person, online, and hybrid courses.
  • Conduct teaching observations and mid-course student reviews of teaching, by instructor request.
  • Work with CETLSS team members to offer signature courses (e.g., Course Redesign Institute, Online in Time), provide workshops, lead learning communities and book clubs related to quality teaching methods aimed at increased student success.
  • Lead, manage, and assist projects and initiatives that support teaching and learning for student success- especially in areas of expertise.
  • Provide support to CETLSS signature events and programs such as New Faculty Orientation and Integration.
  • Develop and promote teaching and learning resources, including contributing to the CETLSS website.
  • Teach student courses (as is feasible) to maintain first-hand teaching experience.
  • Maintain current knowledge of national trends and scholarly work in higher education and engage in professional development that enhances the work of the CETLSS and contributes to the field of educational development.
  • Develop strong rapport and working relationships with the diverse range of educators at Appalachian State, including other members of the CETLSS staff, influencing a culture of care and shared investment in the teaching and learning work of the institution.
