Ecological Restoration InternExpected Dates September 20, 2021 to February 6, 2022 SiteOrgan Pipe Cactus National MonumentPosition IDPO-00731333This position will aid park staff in monitoring, protecting, and restoring natural resources within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The intern will assist the park Botanist with ecological monitoring, landscape restoration, invasive plant management and nursery management. The intern will assist with sampling of vegetation plots, record field data on standard forms, map off-road vehicle track disturbance, use hand tools to remove off-road vehicle tracks, map non-native plant locations, use hand tools to remove non-native plants; propagate and care for plants in the park nursery; enter data and perform quality checks on data. The intern will have the opportunity for on the job training in the management of public lands and natural resources and participate in the application of science in natural resource management.Compensation:+ $160- Weekly Living Allowance+ Housing included+ $2360- AmeriCorps Education Award+ Location DescriptionOrgan Pipe Cactus National Monument is located in the Sonoran desert in Southwestern Arizona. Park headquarters is located 34 miles south of the town of Ajo, Arizona and 5 miles north of the international boundary with Mexico. Average daytime temperatures range from 108 degrees in the summer to 60-70 degrees in the winter. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Ajo, AZ are located in a remote part of the Sonoran Desert. However, the local towns and cities provide multiple amenities that allow individuals to adjust to living in the desert. In the town of Ajo (population 3,500) you will find: a medical clinic, multiple churches, a vibrant county library, a county park with playground, swimming pool, ball parks and community center, and several national chain stores for household goods and electronics. Phoenix, AZ is a 2 hour drive from the park.
