Job/Internship Description
Description
Background

TechnoServe is a nonprofit international development organization founded in 1968. TechnoServe works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses and industries. We are a non-profit organization that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital and markets. Our work is rooted in the idea that given the opportunity, hardworking men and women in even the poorest places can generate income, jobs and wealth for their families and communities. With more than four decades of proven results, we believe in the power of private enterprise to transform lives.

With support from the ExxonMobil Foundation in several countries in Africa (Nigeria, Tanzania and Mozambique), Business Women Connect (BWC) was born out of research showing that accessible micro-savings products are one of the most impactful tools for women entrepreneurs. The BWC 2017 pilot in Mozambique, which trained a variety of Mozambican businesswomen in financial literacy and business skills, indicated significant potential and need for expansion, given the ongoing development of mobile savings. However, it also highlighted a need to support the supply side of effective, accessible savings products while helping women to understand and access these products. The pilot found that the product line “LetsGo” offered by Letshego Bank, which provides an accessible formal financial service suite with 10% interest, is particularly compelling for women due to low documentation requirements, better security and high accessibility.

Under Phase II and III of BWC (in 2018 and 2019 respectively), TechnoServe has been increasing women’s economic opportunity by promoting the effective use of formal savings products, business skills and financial literacy among women Letshego banking agents as well as women customers. TechnoServe has been engaging women entrepreneurs to help them improve their own businesses as well as become effective service providers and ambassadors of formal savings to thousands of other women in Mozambique. To date, the program has trained over 400 women. Phase IV in 2020 will expand the current reach of the project, as well as develop new partnerships. For more information, please see:
