Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Civic Life and Leadership (SCiLL) is the newest school at UNC Chapel Hill and is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. SCiLL was created to better equip our students with the skills needed to engage in public discourse and thus to better prepare them to be stewards and citizen-owners of our shared democracy. SCiLL will provide a home specifically for the study and practice of public discourse, civic life and civic leadership; provide an intellectual grounding in democracy and the American political experience; and serve to support conversations and research on these topics. Housed within SCiLL will be the Program for Public Discourse, as well as new campus-facing, and other public-facing activities.

As the largest unit on campus, the College of Arts and Sciences forms the academic core of the Carolina experience. Our mission is to create knowledge and discover innovative solutions to the world's greatest challenges, to educate outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, and to encourage faculty, staff and students to contribute meaningfully to North Carolina, the nation and the world. Having SCiLL housed within the College allows the new school to draw upon the college's significant intellectual, structural and administrative resources.
