Construction Materials Associate Project Manager

S&ME is looking for a driven and enthusiastic individual to join us as an Associate Project Manager, specializing in aviation projects such as airport facilities, runways, hangars, and more. There is significant growth opportunity to excel into a Project Manager position, as you will be mentored and supported in developing the skills and expertise required for successful project management.


Our aviation team provides full-service Design, Construction Materials Testing, Geotechnical, and Environmental services to small and large airports across the southeast. Our team is focused on growth within the aviation marketplace, and the successful candidate will have a passion for aviation and share in this entrepreneurial spirit. Your expertise will be instrumental in ensuring the quality and integrity of our aviation projects.


Your Day-to-Day:

  • Project Planning and Coordination:
    • Assist in the development of project plans, budgets, timelines, and milestones for aviation projects.
    • Coordinate with various stakeholders, including engineers and construction teams, to ensure project objectives are clearly defined and met.
    • Generate field and laboratory cost estimates and proposals in accordance with projects plans and specifications, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements, and client-provided requests for proposals.
  • Construction Materials Testing:
    • Conduct as well as observe testing and special inspections of construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, and other relevant materials, to ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards
  • Client Interaction:
    • Foster positive relationships with clients, understanding their needs and expectations.
    • Provide regular project updates and ensure client satisfaction through effective communication and project delivery.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Prepare regular progress reports for internal and external stakeholders, highlighting achievements and addressing challenges.
    • Prepare documentation of (and mentor staff in performing) field activities, observations, and testing on construction projects, and their conformance with (or deviation from) project plans and specifications.

What You Bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in civil or geotechnical engineering, construction management, or a closely related field of study
  • 2+ years' experience in construction materials testing
  • Good organization skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable ASTM, AASHTO, FAA and DOT standards and procedures, as well as IBC Special Inspections

The Work Environment:

In this position, you'll need to be willing and able to perform the physical demands required with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough and uneven terrain
  • Standing up to 8-12+ hours a day, on occasion
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
