Position Description

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading the design and development of electromechanical actuators for use in the aerospace and defense markets. The position requires extensive understanding of the behavior of mechanical systems as well as the interaction with BLDC prime movers.

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer is responsible for reviewing and interpreting customer requirements, and assessing the level of effort required to fulfill them. This position is also responsible for leading proposal efforts, prototype development and other New Product Introduction (NPI) activities culminating in the transition of new products into production.

Kearfott's Aerospace and Defense EM applications include:

  • * Missile Fin Control Actuation Systems
  • * High Bandwidth position servos,
  • * Smart Linear actuators
  • * Utility Actuation
  • * Cockpit Controls


Essential Functions

Product Life Cycle Engineering

  • Development of new concepts and proposal solutions
  • Understanding of manufacturing and design trade-offs (practical implementation of designs)
  • Development and validation of performance models
  • Gear-train Design and Stress Analysis based on industry standard practices
    • Spur and Planetary gear-train design experience preferred
  • Support cost proposal activity including:
    • Manufacturing and design cost assessment
  • Participate as a member of a cross-functional project team focused on development of customer funded projects as well as IR&D projects
  • Support Manufacturing fabrication and assembly
  • Support the creation of test procedures and test reports
  • Support engineering and production Acceptance and Qualification test
  • Creates 3D CAD models of design concepts, and develops detailed 2D drawings while working with designers.
  • Perform and coordinate design analysis using ANSYS, Matlab, and other CAE tools

Business Development Support

  • Travel as required to support market development and customer needs
  • Support and advance relationships with our customer's engineering teams

Required Experience
  • Minimum 5 years' experience required, in an aerospace motion control engineering and manufacturing environment
  • B.S., General Engineering, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering required
  • New product development experience required
  • Experience as a member of a cross-functional project team focused on development of customer funded projects and/or IR&D projects required
  • 3-D CAD experience, SolidWorks preferred
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US, visa sponsorship not available
  • Must be able to work on U.S. government programs and/or obtain security clearance in the future
  • Solid understanding of aerospace and defense markets and requirements preferred
  • Systems design, development and integration experience preferred
