Job Description
Position Information

New Hanover County's Building Safety Permitting department is seeking a customer-oriented, computer-savvy Permitting Specialist who knows how to provide top-notch service and is delightful to customers during every interaction. If you are familiar with the permitting-related processes for building construction and trade work, a great communicator, and enjoy going above and beyond for customers, this job is for you!

This position is responsible for receiving and processing building and trade permit applications from developers, contractors, and homeowners. It serves as a first point of contact for customers seeking information on the status of the various agency reviews of the work proposed in the permit application. The person in this position also responds to customers contacting the county in person, by phone, or by email. Duties include the following: assisting customers in the lobby; reviewing permit applications for their completeness and determining the scope of the plan review; guiding applicants through the permit process; setting up projects in the COAST software system; scheduling inspections; referring customers to the appropriate department's technical or subject matter expert for additional information; accepting payments; issuing building permits; and performing other duties of a similar nature.

The Building Safety Permitting department has a team of dedicated staff who focus on effective county government and have strategic objectives of (1) continuous focus on the customer experience and (2) delivering quality service at the right time. Our approach to permitting rules and regulations focuses on compliance rather than enforcement.
