About the Department
The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties
This position provides support for the Ophthalmology department through clinical and research-related work.
  • Clinical Support:
    • Provides care for patients within the small and large animal veterinary hospital.
    • Offers unique customer service to external clients and internal stakeholders (students, interns, residents, faculty, and staff).
    • Interacts with private owners and referring veterinarians (rDVM) via email and phone communications.
    • Assists with client check-in, patient admitting, updates, scheduling, and inquiries.
    • Performs restraint, catheter placement, venipuncture, and IV injections.
    • Administers drugs via IV, oral, and subcutaneous routes.
  • Technical Procedures:
    • Assists with various technical procedures including:
      • ERG (Electroretinography)
      • Ocular ultrasound
      • Ocular photography
      • Surgical preparation
      • Various routine diagnostic testing
  • Research Support:
    • Restrains and provides patient care for small, large, and laboratory animals.
    • Performs scientific experiments in a research laboratory setting.
    • Assists primary investigators in conducting research.
    • Provides technical expertise, project planning, and laboratory management skills.
    • Collaborates with ophthalmology faculty and associates.
    • Maintains safety training logs, safety plans, and Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) protocols.
  • Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Collects, produces, and analyzes data for various clinical and research-related procedures and projects.
  • Education and Training:
    • Teaches various aspects to:
      • Year 1-4 veterinary students
      • Interns
      • Residents
      • Graduate students
      • Research associates
Other Responsibilities

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow all research protocols
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Experience working with companion animals, and comfortable working with horses.
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem-solvingand team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high-quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Desire to teach veterinary, graduate, and post-graduate students.
