Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
This position will assist with the operational management of the Student and Community Farm as well as with the production of diversified crops.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Student and Community Farm is to serve as a conduit for education, research and extension by providing students and the community a platform dedicated to collective discovery, experiential learning, and sustainable food production. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design is one of four departments in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The Department offers three Bachelor of Science degrees, each in Agriculture and Environmental Systems with concentration in Sustainable Land and Food Systems or Environmental Studies, in Biological Engineering, and in Landscape Architecture. The department also offers Masters and Doctoral degrees and gives students the academic background for analyzing and solving scientific and social complexities of agriculture and natural resource management. The Department's educational philosophy is to minimize prescriptive procedures and provide students with tools for applying scientific knowledge to practical problems.
Work Hours 40 hours work week infrequent weekend hours.

- To propagate and grow diversified crops such as vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs, using sustainable practices.
- To manage soil and fertility
- To manage crop irrigation
- To manage plant health
- To handle harvest and post-harvest management of the crops grown
- To develop and manage outlets for the production
- To initiate purchases to keep the student farm operational within the available budget
Required Competency Operations - Research Support
Duties
Required Competency: Operations - Research Support (30%) = Operational management of the Student Farm.
Includes:
- Ability to conduct soil preparation, planting, maintenance, harvest and post-harvest activities for the various crops grown
- Have basic mechanical skills

Associated Duties - This position requires maintaining the Student Farm as a conducive environment for students' experiential learning.
It includes:
- The operation of small farm equipment to perform the duties
- To maintain GAP and food safety standards at the student farm, and ensure respect of farm policies and procedures
- To be able to identify and report problems
- To work with students and organize volunteer activities
- To prepare estimates of purchase needs for proper operation of the Student Farm
Required Competency Data Collection
Duties
Required Competency: Data Collection (10%)
- Ability to collect, organize and tabulate data
- Ability to ensure quality control of experiments and data collection

Associated Duties: This position requires collecting data from educational activities and experiments. Be detail-oriented and able to ensure quality control of the data is important.
Required Competency Laboratory/Subject Care
Duties
Required Competency: Subject Care / Development of Student Farm (30%)
- Ability to program, operate and maintain student farm equipment in proper condition
- Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies
- Ensure compliance with sanitation and safety procedures
- Be able to handle chemicals in safe and appropriate conditions
- Manage and oversee students and volunteers
- Contribute to the development of the Student Farm by assisting in organizing special activities and events
Associated Duties: This position requires maintaining equipment in proper conditions for the operation of the Student Farm, as well as ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards (including GAP and food safety standards).
