TSC's Innovation and Rapid Development Division is actively recruiting an experienced Lead Technical Writer coordinate and develop manned/unmanned aviation and maintenance related publications, checklists, technical orders, job guides, syllabi, plans of instruction, job aids, and related standard operating procedures (SOP). Directly reports to the Chief of Standardization and provides support to Mission Operations.

The Lead Technical Writer shall assist the Chief of Standardization with maturing existing capabilities and further bolster Safety, Training, Evaluations, and Flight Test for all aviation related personnel and activities. The Lead Technical Writer will work closely with the Chief of Standardization, Mission Operations, Aviation Support and Functional Program Management Team. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, possess the appropriate ability and initiative, work autonomously, solve problems, and operate in dynamic environment while coordinating information between multiple stakeholders. The primary work location for this position is intended to be filled in a variety of locations; travel % would be dependent upon location.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be the primary focal point for the developing new and maintain current technical publications and documentation, directly in support of Aviation related personnel/equipment. The supported workforce is distributed across multiple geographically separated sites in support of sustained global aviation operation network. This role is pivotal to supporting the Director of Operations and Program Manager to grow the scope of Service oriented deliverables in a high stake's environment.

The responsibilities of this include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop/maintain all aviation related documentation to meet company standards and contractual requirements for compliance.
  • Gain deep understanding of products and services, and translate complex information into simple, polished, engaging content.
  • Write user-friendly content that meets the needs of target audience, turning insights into language for user/operator success.
  • Develop and maintain detailed database of reference materials, including research, usability tests, and design specifications.
  • Evaluate current content and develop innovative methods for improvement.
  • Work under minimal supervision; proactively develops new material deliverables for ADO review.
  • Ability to work in an autonomous settings with minimal supervision; proactively develops new material deliverables and continuously improve current products and process for review.
  • Coordinate/participate in internal & external stakeholder requirements/approvals; including annual Government inspections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research, outline, write, and edit content, working closely with various departments to understand project requirements.
  • Gather information from various stakeholders and subject-matter experts to develop, organize, and write procedure manuals, technical specifications, and process documentation.
  • Work with development and support leads to identify documentation repositories, revise and edit, and determine best solutions for data compilation and centralized storage.
  • Research, create, and maintain information architecture templates that adhere to organizational and contractual standards and allow for easy data migration.
  • Develop content in alternative media forms for maximum usability, with consistent voice across all documentation.
  • Foster a culture of safety and compliance within the aviation and mission operations team.
  • Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement and drive operational excellence.
  • Other miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Two or more years of experience as an effective technical writer within the aviation/aerospace field.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn and understand complex subject matter.
  • Experience in writing documentation and procedure manuals for department of defense programs of record.
  • Superb written communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Experience in working with engineers to improve user experience (ex: design, UI), refine content, and create visuals and diagrams for technical support content.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Highly proficient in the use of common business software applications (MS Office Suite).
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to track deliverable timelines and project completion.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize work.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate with external entities and company personnel.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Must be willing to make decisions and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to interpret sketches from engineers, technical writers, et al, and covert TO illustrations.
  • Ability to "multi-task" and adjust to changing situations with minimal interruption in work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in Technical Writing, Communications, Engineering, or a related technical field, or >5 years' experience in Department of Defense (DoD) and/or Government Owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) technical writing.
  • US Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET level clearance.
  • Proven experience as a Technical Writer, preferably in the DoD/GOCO Aviation industry.
  • Firm understanding of SDLC (systems development lifecycle)
  • Previous experience in software development.
  • Professional certification (ex: Society for Technical Communication)
  • Experience in using XML tools to create documentation.
  • Experience in leading functional/cross functional initiatives.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, and organize completion of multiple tasks simultaneously according to importance of projects or tasks assigned.
  • Ability to understand and apply company practices, policies, and procedures to conduct assigned tasks.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively, tactfully, and respectfully.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience within U.S. Air Force, Wing Level Standardization & Evaluation Office.
  • Demonstrated experience as Technical Writer and/or Illustrator on DoD Airborne ISR weapon system.
  • Able to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings for conversion into TO compatible line drawings.
  • Knowledge/experience with graphics design/management software, including AutoCAD.
  • Perform conversions of halftones (photographs) into line drawings and prepare exploded views of equipment to be used in parts breakdowns and for disassembly/assembly instructions.
  • Experience using Costpoint and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of DCAA Compliant Timekeeping Standards.
  • Ability or eligibility to qualify for Instructor and Evaluator Pilot Qualification.
