Job Description

We are seeking a Chemist to join Arkema as part of our Coating Resins business, based in Cary, NC. This position is responsible for providing analytical support to R&D, technical service, quality, and manufacturing of the Arkema Coating Resins business unit. The role requires hands on laboratory work to generate analytical data using a variety of analytical tools and sample preparation methods, as well as timely communications to internal and external customers. The incumbent is also expected to perform maintenance and configuration of instrument hardware, software, and laboratory information databases with the support of specialists on those topics. Work is to be performed in accordance with safe laboratory practices and with active participation in Arkema's safety initiatives and programs.

Key Activities and Responsibilities:

Perform routine sample preparation and analyses:

  • Performs analysis of internal and external customer samples according to established SOPs
  • Organizes data and reports analysis results to supervisor and requesters in a timely manner.
  • Develops sufficient understanding of ASR analytical capabilities and ACR polymer chemistries so to be able to recommend appropriate techniques and connect ACR scientists and engineers with ASR analysts.

Explore and expand analytical capabilities:

  • Acts as embedded analytical support for R&D and Q&M project teams as needed.
  • Makes recommendations on how to overcome project-related obstacles or conflicts.
  • Recommends method improvement and develops new analytical procedures to support business needs in collaboration with R&D scientists and analytical specialists in ASR.
  • Works with R&D capital planning and site facilities teams to select, purchase, and install new instruments.

Maintain Lab Equipment and Supplies:

  • Performs scheduled maintenance on laboratory equipment and acts as a liaison with specialist support for larger issues.
  • Maintains all computers in the analytical laboratory and the associated instrument software; Back up the data on non-networked computers periodically.

Context and Environment:

  • Actively promotes safe behavior in the workgroup and takes responsibility for personal safe lab operations.
  • Participates in departmental safety initiatives.
  • Operates in compliance with site safety policies, including material handling and waste disposal.
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.).
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all healthy, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident, or injury incidents.

Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or other related technical field.
  • General knowledge and hands on experience using GC, GCMS, RP-LC, GPC, FTIR, DSC, optical microscopy, zeta potential, particle size analysis, and/or titration is preferred. Expected to have or quickly develop the necessary expertise for troubleshooting, repair of these techniques.
  • Prior experience with chromatography data systems and laboratory information management systems, or at least the technical aptitude and inclination to learn about them.
  • Organize and analyze data to explain conclusions and outcomes with evaluation and interpretation of data appropriate to the complexity of the result.
  • Proficient with computer software applications (MS words, Excel, PowerPoint, Minitab, etc.)
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain strong customer/collegial relationships.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to conducting work ethically and lawfully.
