Purpose of the Job

The Director, Consumer Collections is responsible for the oversight of consumer collections staff and departmental operations. The Director develops and implements strategies for improving collection effectiveness to reduce delinquencies and charge-offs, and to optimally maximize funds recovered while minimizing recovery timeframes. Utilizes extensive expertise in collections, knowledge of sound business practices, and proven skills of managing a multi-functional staff to achieve departmental success. The Collections department's mission is to minimize loan and account overdraft delinquency and charge-offs using all means permitted by law and consistent with the Credit Union's culture.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Directs the collections process including bankruptcies, repossessions, charged off accounts, consumer foreclosures, loan settlements, adjustments, and garnishments. Develops, implements, and revises formal Collections policies and procedures Develops and reviews management reports to evaluate the effectiveness of current collection-related activities and trends and collection policies, procedures, and practices Proactively monitors early-stage and late-stage delinquency and loss trends and effectively communicates those trends to executive management on a timely basis Manages the department to achieve collection KPIs and deliver on established goals Assists senior management in the development and implementation of recovery strategies designed to achieve departmental success. Coaches and develops employees for exceptional performance, results, and member service related to their specific role in the department, i.e. complex bankruptcies, repossessions, workout and loan modifications; Assists collectors with assessing collections options, tools and implementation of tactics including inbound and outbound calling strategies. Oversees the collection and maintenance of all consumer Real Estate Owned accounts. Provides all necessary support to attorneys needed to work accounts to resolution. Reports results on a regular basis. Drives results through the collections department and third parties in pursuit of charged off accounts for full balance collection or acceptable negotiated settlement. Maintains compliance procedures with applicable government regulation and Credit Union polices regarding consumer and lending and collections. Assists in bankruptcy and litigation functions to minimize timeframes for the collection of funds and to maximize the amount received. Manages third party vendors engaged in collection and recovery activities on behalf of, and in the name of, the Credit Union. Responsible for vendor management and oversight, including execution of quality control plans and annual reviews. Recommends accounts for charge-off according to policy. Approves or recommends for approval asset sales, and litigation/collection settlements. Conducts annual review process, including writing and delivering reviews. Interviews and selects candidates for open positions, as needed. Develops department budget and is responsible for adhering to fiscal guidelines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have strong understanding of standard concepts, practices, procedures, and regulations within the credit administration environment
  • Must have advanced knowledge of collection procedures, call center procedures and technology, consumer bankruptcy laws and procedures, repossessions, foreclosure and recovery
  • Must have working knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to Collections and Lending, including FDCPA, FCRA, FACTA, TCPA and fair lending regulations, and management and control of operations to ensure compliance
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a decisive approach to problem solving required, which facilitates interaction with members at all levels and particularly with members who often face challenging financial situations
  • Must have excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
  • Must be able to show persistence, determination, tact and accountability
  • Must be able to maintain objectivity and emotional stability under pressure
  • Must possess the ability to communicate and initiate change and possess a positive attitude while explaining and supporting organizational decisions, directions and procedures.
  • Must have intermediate skills in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Must be resourceful and well organized, with strong attention to detail
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks concurrently
  • Must have ability to effectively coach employees and who deal with members in stressful situations
  • Must have the ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies and procedures
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Must be able to work in a general office environment
  • Must be able to complete assignments with minimal supervision
  • Should possess a strong commitment to providing excellent service to Truliant's members

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping required
  • Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time and use a computer
  • Must be able to moderately lift or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds

Education and Background

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years collections experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience required
