We have an opportunity for a Patent Specialist to join our team. You will support Pentair's global business and legal initiatives as a member of the legal team. The position will report to the Associate General Counsel of Intellectual Property. Interested candidates, who meet the requirements below, are encouraged to apply today!

You will:

  • Identify, collect, and review new inventions, lead IP review boards, and guide patenting decisions in coordination with AGC and in-house patent search team.
  • Actively develop patent portfolio, including personally drafting new patent applications and reviewing, evaluating, and providing feedback on patent applications drafted by outside counsel.
  • Manage global patent portfolio using patent portfolio database tools. Lead patent valuation and annuity payment decisions with input from business stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement IP best practices, policies, and procedures. Develop and provide IP training to R&D and business teams to raise IP awareness across the global organization.
  • Initiate, maintain, and share market and competitor IP intelligence to drive strategic discussions.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field. A JD is not required.
  • USPTO Patent Agent Registration is mandatory for this role.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience working in a law firm and/or in-house legal departments.
  • Experience in drafting, prosecuting, and managing patent applications.
  • Experience in helping to build and manage a patent portfolio a plus.
  • Experience using online databases (e.g., USPTO, Epoline, PatSnap, Questel Orbit, etc.)
  • Be able to provide excellent, timely customer service in a fast-paced and quickly evolving business environment. Enjoy the challenge of unfamiliar and tasks and projects.
  • Be able to work effectively in a matrixed environment.
