Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • MA in Rhetoric & Composition or related field
  • Experience teaching or tutoring advanced undergraduates or graduate students in academic writing (at least two years)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Website management abilities
  • Knowledge of genres and conventions of academic writing
License/Certification Required

Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or related field.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The primary purpose of University College is to provide academic support services. The University Writing Center assists students working on writing projects. Writing Across the Curriculum supports faculty teaching writing across the university.

The primary purpose of the Writing Specialist is to provide consultation services to students through the University Writing Center and faculty through the Writing Across the Curriculum Program.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
  • meeting with students and other clients about their writing projects in individual and small group appointments
  • meeting with faculty in individual consultations about writing and writing instruction
  • teaching classes and giving workshops on writing
  • creating resources for writers and writing instructors
  • managing the University Writing Center's website
  • participating in on-going professional development, research, and assessment projects
  • assisting University Writing Center and Writing Across the Curriculum administrators with program projects and initiatives
  • serving on university committees
